Fly Fishing in Patagonia, Chile

Enjoy a Patagonia Fly Fishing Vacation with the Experienced Guides From Sunrise Fly Shop and Lago los Torres

The Patagonia region of Chile is one of the most majestic places you will ever visit in your life.  Imagine the vastness of Alaska combined with the rivers of Montana, and the granite cliffs of Yosemite National Park.  Now remove all other fly fishing anglers and add the opportunity to fish to gigantic brown trout that love to eat dry flies, and you start to understand why Patagonia is the fly fishing destination of a lifetime.

Stay at Patagonia's Most Comfortable Fly Fishing Lodge

Lago los Torres (Lake of the Towers) Lodge was built by German immigrants in the early 1940’s.  These ambitions immigrants traveled and blazed a trail for 6 weeks from the modern day city of Coyhaique.  The lodge is nestled in a valley at approximately 1,500 ft, surrounded by peaks up to 7,500 ft with 5 visible glaciers from the lodge.  Located on 25,000 acres, the Lago los Torres property borders the Rio Travieosoa as well as Lago los Torres itself.  The lodge is powered with a hydroelectric generator and is equipped with the modern amenities of home. The lodge itself is a rustic log cabin, comfortably furnished with 5 bedrooms and 2 baths for the clients.  There is no other lodge like it in Patagonia.

Fly Fishing Patagonia--Like Montana 50 Years Ago

Whether floating down the rivers in our fully equipped fly fishing friendly rafts, or wading accessible streams and creeks, the diversity of the fly fishing water and the natural aggressiveness of the fish in this region of Patagonia provides many opportunities to fish small dries, large terrestrials, nymphs and streamers to trophy brown and rainbow trout.  Throughout the fly fishing season  in Patagonia. the most common style of fly fishing is “pounding the banks” with huge foam terrestrials to large trout lurking under logs and in soft spots.  On any given day you have the opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime--true trophy rainbows and browns, with the breathtaking snowcapped Andes of Patagonia and numerous waterfalls and glaciers as your backdrop.

Our experienced fly fishing guides have been guiding the rivers of the Patagonia region of Chile for 13 years and know how to fish the rivers of the region better than anyone.  They are some of the most knowledgeable and experienced fly fishing guides in all of Patagonia.  You can rest assured that our knowledge of the rivers, the micro-climate conditions, the eating references and habits of the fish, and the fly fishing techniques necessary to have the fishing day of your life with the solitude that comes from being the only raft on the river, are second to none in Patagonia.

Testimonials from Happy Patagonia Fly Fishing Clients

"Fly fishing in Patagonia with the Sunrise Fly Shop was the greatest fly fishing experience of my life.  13 straight days of fly fishing some of the best trout waters in Patagonia left us tired, grinning and wanting more.  The fly fishing guides are top notch, having been fly fishing and guiding in Patagonia for 13 years, and Carlos the chef is a wizard.  The accomodations are rustic and comfortable, not like staying in some stuffy and pretentious lodge.  Every day we would get up, have a great breakfast and talk about the fishing options of the day.  We would load up the truck and off we went, exploring new valleys and mountains in our region of Patagonia, and drifting for miles on beautiful and rarely touched waters, casting big dry dragonflies and beetles to monster trout under logs, in the shadows, riffles and pools.  The fish in Patagonia love big terrestrials, and it was such a kick to watch them rise to your fly.  You've got to be paying attention all the time though, because the fish will come out of nowhere and strike hard and fast.  It was tough to stop for the delicious shore lunches Carlos provided, because we were having so much fun fly fishing and catching the beautiful brown trout Patagonia has to offer.  Every night, we would pour a drink and eat the regional snacks and delicacies Carlos would make, then sit down to a phenomenal dinner and an excellent selection of Chilean wines.  The guides kept us laughing non-stop with their stories, and were always patient with us, teaching us how to fish the Patagonia rivers and ensuring we were having a great time.  All in all, our Patagonia fly fishing vacation with the Sunrise Fly Shop was everything we had expected and more.  Don't miss an opportunity to experience it for yourself".  Lou Unkeless, El Dorado Hills, CA

Having recently retired, I was looking for a fly fishing adventure, and guide Eric Thorsen had the answer—fly fish Patagonia!  Having gone fly fishing on many of Montana’s best trout rivers with Eric, I had total confidence in his ability to put me on a fish. And so it was in February of this year, I found myself landing in Balmaceda, Chile, en-route to the Aysen region of Patagonia.  To say this area of Patagonia is remote would be an understatement; in 13 days of fly fishing, on only two occasions did we momentarily cross paths with another person.  Casting huge foam terrestrials to big trout in Patagonia challenged my casting ability like no other river I had fished before, but the payoff was enormous, literally. While I have always appreciated the focus necessary to be successful at fly fishing, I’m ashamed to say I did find myself being distracted by the thought of what Carlos, the lodge’s resident chef, was whipping up for dinner--the food was amazing.  I think what impressed me most about this Patagonia based fly fishing lodge and guide service was the logistics necessary to put you into prime water to fly fish for these big brown trout.  The guides worked very hard for us on each day’s fly fishing excursion, loading up the trucks, taking us into the Andes to remote rivers that had not seen another fly angler in weeks, and getting us to spots on the rivers where we had the best shot at landing a monster brown on a big foam terrestrial. While there may be other fly fishing outfitters that operate in this region of Patagonia, I feel confident in saying no one but Sunrise Fly Shop can offer the diversity of fly fishing water I experienced during my 13 days of fly fishing spring creeks, hidden lakes, and rivers in the Aysen region of Patagonia, Chile.  If you are looking for the fly fishing adventure of a lifetime, look no further and book a trip to fly fish Patagonia with Sunrise Fly Shop.  You will not be disappointed.  Thanks Eric for making it happen!
