Beaverhead River Fishing Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Saturday, January 16, 2016

Happy new year to everyone and we are glad to get out our first Beaverhead River fishing report of the season. It's pretty quiet in Southwest Montana and we are enjoying a great valley snowpack and a slightly above average snowpack for the Jefferson drainage, which includes the Beaverhead River valley. Currently Clark Canyon Reservoir is 50% full so an above average snowpack will increase the chances of the reservoir filling up this spring. The Beaverhead is a good place to get some winter fishing done. You have options of Poindexter Slough and everything below Pipe Organ Bridge is open to fishing right now on the Beaverhead. It's been a pretty chilly winter in Southwest Montana. We have seen only a handful of days reaching above 32 degrees in the valley. We will keep you posted throughout the winter season.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Saturday, August 15, 2015

The Beaverhead River has been fishing very tough lately. Clark Canyon Reservoir has a dirty outflow and the river is rather mossy. It has been a tough prospect up there, hopefully it improves. You will find hatches of Tricos and PMD's. The lower Beaverhead River has been fishing well with hoppers. Outflows of Clark Canyon is currently 301cfs. You will do best on the upper Beaverhead River if you fish the  3 foot riffles so you don't collect moss on your nymphs.

Flies: #18 Hunchback;  #18 Zebra Midge; #18 Trico Spinner;#18 Trico Comparadun; #16 Rusty Spinner; #16 CDC PMD;#18 Split Back PMD Olive/Brown; #18 Pheasant Tail; #18 psycho Mayfly; #18 Captive Dun ; #6 Fat Albert; #6 Parachute Hopper; #6 Morrish Hopper

Beaverhead River Fishing Great

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Flows out of Clark Canyon are dropping but they have stabilized at 600cfs. We have had great fishing from the Dam down to High Bridge. You will find PMD's hatching in the mornings with a nice spinner fall in the slick.  Nymphing has been consistent with #18 Split Back PMD's and #18 Crack Back PMD's. Some basic nymphs have been working like #18 Pheasant Tails and tan Scuds. We have not had the Yellow Sally hatch this year that we have all been used to on the Beaverhead. We are not sure why but the bugs are not out in the numbers we have seen in the past. Our Beaverhead guides have had great fishing lately and it should continue all week. Our shop is equipped with all the hot Beaverhead bugs, stop in for advice and tactics.

The Beaverhead River fishing report from out guides have been nothing but great lately. The hatches have finally started to get the fish looking up. You will find hatches of PMD's and Sallies during the day and Caddis in the evenings. The flows are high right now on the Beaverhead, which will make for tough wading right now but great drift boat fishing. We have had good dry fly fishing in the slick and good dry fly fishing below high bridge and down to Grasshopper boat ramp. You will not find solitude on the Beaverhead right now but don't worry their are plenty of fish for everyone on the Beaverhead.

Flows are up on the Beaverhead and the fish are liking it. The water coming out of Clark Canyon is cold and clean right now. We are finding the start of the PMD hatch. You will find fish up and eating in the slick. Nymphing has been dynamite. Fish are eating a variety of PMD nymphs, and yellow Sallies. Wade fishing is a tough prospect right now. It will help to be in a boat to get to each hole. Our Beayerhead River Guides have had stellar fishing on the Beaverhead River and it should stay consistent for awhile.
