MELROSE WEATHER

Thursday, February 07, 2019

We just got another blast of winter here in Southwest Montana. We woke this morning to -20 degree air temperatures. Our snowpack for the Big Hole drainage is hovering around 95% for this date in time. We still have plenty of winter left but we are all itching for spring trout fishing. Depending on when the ice gets off the Big Hole our Spring season is about 7 weeks away. We will have hatches of Skwalas and Blue winged olives to start the season. Our spring special packages are available again. We are excited to have our lodging to offer for the spring packages. Click here for more information on spring fishing packages.

Fall fishing on the Big Hole River has been pretty good for us so far this month. River flows are in excellent shape and the trout have been healthy this season. Our fall hatches are winding down for the year. On the warmer afternoons you will find some Blue Winged Olives and mahogany duns. On the cold days you will need to stay subsurface with nymphs and streamers. Your best window of active fish feeding is around 10:00 am to 4:00pm. Darker streamers have been working the best lately for us. Time to get the last couple floats of the year in before winter is here.

Fall is in full swing on the Big Hole River. This is an amazing time of year. We are currently seeing the peak foliage of the cottonwoods lining the banks. If you are lucky you can see elk along some of the Big Hole River meadows, moose and plenty of water foul. As far as fishing, we have some of our best days this time of year. The brown trout are packing on the pounds before the spawn. Streamers are working in full force. Flash minnows, J.J.'s, Little Kim's and Home Invaders are all doing well with the streamer fisherman. Some of the warmer overcast days we have had Blue Winged olives and mahogany duns keeping the dry fly enthusiasts happy. Nymphing has been active with Pat's stones, micro mayflies and psycho mayflies.

Fishing has been a bit all over the board lately. The clear sunny days have been tough, but the overcast damp days have had the larger brown trout on the prowl. You will find some hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns lately. The streamer fisherman have done well during the low light times. Streamers of choice have been J.J's, Flash Minnows in olive and black, Little Kim's and tan Home Invaders. the lower Big Hole below Melrose is seeing a nice bump in flows. Fall fishing is here and it is time to get your streamer box out and enjoy the last six weeks of trout fishing season on the wonderful Big Hole River.

Looks like tomorrow will be our first blast of fall weather. Cooler weather with some rain should bring the aggressive brown trout back on the feed on the Big Hole. A few of the cottonwoods are turning yellow and the willows along the banks are showing some fall colors. This all means that it's time to throw streamers and the fall baetis and Mahogany Duns are going to blanket the water. The best fishing hours are moving to the middle of the day while the water warms in to the upper 50's.

Jenny with an awesome trout from the Big Hole

Monday, September 03, 2018

Late summer fishing has been holding up pretty well on the Big Hole River. With the cool crisp mornings and pleasant afternoon warm up, we are seeing trico hatches in the mornings and some great hopper fishing on the Big Hole in the afternoon. On some of the damp overcast days you will find fall baetis hatches and the opportunity for trout to take streamers rather aggressively. Flows remain above average and the entire Big Hole River is in great shape for September fishing. Our Big Hole River guides have been floating from the Jerry Creek stretches down to the Notch bottom stretches of the Big Hole. It's time to get the last of the hopper fishing before fall fishing takes over.

Fred with a fantastic brown caught on the Big Hole River

Tuesday, August 14, 2018

Dry fly fishing on the Big Hole River has been pretty good lately. It has been so good that our guides haven't even been putting a nymph dropper below the dry fly. In the morning around 9 am you will find Spruce Moths. Then around 11 am the tricos will be filling the recipe. From 1 pm on we have been throwing hoppers with some nice success. You will find the Spruce Moth's from Jerry Creek down into the Maiden Rock Canyon. Streamers have been working well in the shallow fast riffles. The color of choice for streamers has been olive or tan lately.

A Great trout landed on a trico dry fly a couple days ago on the Big Hole River

Wednesday, August 01, 2018

Dry fly fishing has been stellar lately on the Big Hole River. The Spruce Moth hatch from Jerry Creek down to the Maiden Rock Canyon has been excellent. Your best dry fly fishing on Spruce Moth's has been from around 8 am - 2:00 pm. We are seeing some trico's but the hatch has not taken off yet. Look for trico's to be in the ball game in the next week or so on the Big Hole River. The lower Big Hole has been the place to be for decent hopper fishing. We are seeing a lot of hoppers on the banks, so it could really heat up this August for hopper fishing. Streamer fishing has been good in the fast riffles.

Fishing on the Big Hole is starting to heat up again. We have been seeing the first signs of Spruce Moths on the water. The Spruce Moth is not widespread on the river but several banks in the canyon are seeing activity on the surface. Besides spruce moths we are seeing PMD's, Yellow Sallies, and some caddis. The best fishing is from about 8:00 am - 3:00pm. If you have a warm afternoon please watch the water temperature. If temperatures reach 68 degrees please give the trout a break. Flows remain pretty good for this time of year on the Big Hole. The Maiden rock gauge is 762cfs and the Melrose gauge is 634cfs.
