Big Hole River Fishing Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Thursday, July 27, 2017

The transition from hatches of PMD's and nocturnal stoneflies into Spruce Moth's and Trico's are going on right now on the Big Hole. We have started to see some Spruce Moth's in the Dewey canyon and the Maiden Rock Canyon. Trico's have been spotted below Melrose and on the upper Big Hole. Ants and small attractors have also been working well. Patters such as PMX's and small chernobyl's have been working well. The streamer fishing in the shallow riffle water has remained very good for large trout in the morning hours. Our guide trips have been floating the Jerry Creek Section, Maiden Rock section and below Melrose. Here is the link to any Hoot Owl closures on our waters.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Tuesday, July 18, 2017

We are currently in between hatches on the Big Hole. You will find PMD's in the morning, some drakes are still around and you will also find Yellow Sallies and nocturnal stoneflies. Flow remain very good for this time of year. The warm afternoons and long days have some of the reaches warming into the 70's in late afternoon hours. Please take a break when water temperatures exceed 70 degrees. We have been doing well with PMD nymphs, stone fly nymphs and streamers after the morning hatch. Don't overlook the shallow riffles, you will be surprised at what you can hook on the end of your line. The very lower Big Hole below Notch Bottom down to the Jefferson is on Hoot Owl, and the very upper Big Hole near Wisdom is also on Hoot Owl. Hoot Owl means it is illegal to fish after 2:00pm till 12:00am. Here is a map to help you find the locations. Click Here.

Our home waters on the Big Hole are not under any restrictions. We have been floating the Jerry Creek section, Divide, Maiden Rock and below Melrose with no restrictions.

Big Hole Fishing Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Saturday, June 03, 2017

June has been off to a high water start. The Big Hole is almost at flood stage around Melrose. We would not suggest floating in the Melrose area due to high flows right now. Our Big Hole River guides have been fishing the upper Big Hole. Above the Wise River the Big Hole has 2 feet of clarity on the banks. We have been successful with dead drifting streamers, worms and stone fly nymphs. This is a good time to get all of your gear ready for the Salmonfly Hatch. We are getting close to the hatch and we will keep you posted once we see the bugs. We are hoping the river drops before the bugs start to hatch. The first area that we will see the Salmonflies will be around the Glen Access site.

Mark that calendar for June 10th. Our 2nd Annual Salmonfly Fest will be from 5pm - 9pm on June 10th.  We have music from Smokestack and the Foothill Furry. We have food from Brunchies, and Rollin Bites brick oven Pizza. Beaverhead Brewery will be here, and Rattlesnake Distillery. We have giveaways and raffle items from Patagonia, Winston Rods, Simms Fishing Products, Dirty Water Fly Company, Bauer Reels, Scientific Anglers and much more.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Sunday, March 26, 2017

The massive ice jams and flooding events that took place last week are all behind us on the Big Hole. You will still see large ice chunks the size of small VW's pushed up over the banks of the upper Big Hole. The entire river is flowing ice free at this point and the river is starting to come into shape. Clarity is improving daily and water temperatures should start climbing this week to activate the fish throughout the day as the water flows continue to drop. We had some Big Hole River guides out today scouting the river and they had some success in very specific locations. It should be a good week on the Big Hole and it is time to start thinking about the Skwala hatch. We will keep you posted on when the hatch starts and it's movement on the lower Big Hole. As for now we would stay subsurface with Skwalla nymphs, San Juan Worms and slow moving streamers. Some Spring specials are still available. Click here for information on our Spring Special.

Big Hole River Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Wednesday, September 07, 2016

Fall is in the air and the trout are responding to the change of the seasons. We got a nice bump in flows due to valley rain and mountain snow. Fishing has been very good lately. The brown trout are looking to pack on the pounds for the spawn later this month. Streamer fishing has been very good. Natural and olive color streamers have been the best ticket lately. You will find fish eating the streamers in the shallow riffles and deeper pools. We have also done well with a #10 black or olive/brown pat's stone. You will find Blue Winged Olives hatching around 2:00 in the afternoon.

The Big Hole River is open without any restrictions from Dickey Bridge down to FWP Maiden Rock. Please note Maiden Rock FWP is the lower Maiden Rock, which is out of the canyon a few miles upstream from Melrose. Here is a map to help you with the closures http://www.bhwc.org/fish-water/river-conditions/

Big Hole River Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Thursday, August 11, 2016

Fishing has been ok on the Big Hole lately. The Spruce Moth fishing looks like it is done for the year. It was a fantastic hatch this year but we have not seen anymore since the rain last week. Trico fishing is the main recipe for the dry fly fisherman. After the Trico hatch in the mornings on the sunny days you will need to get down and nymph. Overcast days we have had good luck with #16 Comparaduns and small chubby chernobyl's. Not much for any hopper fishing yet on the Big Hole. The Big Hole River is open without any restrictions from Dickey Bridge down to FWP Maiden Rock. Please note Maiden Rock FWP is the lower Maiden Rock, which is out of the canyon a few miles upstream from Melrose. Here is a map to help you with the closures http://bhwc.org/fish-water/river-conditions/

Nymphing has been good in the shallow fast riffles in the afternoon.  "Hoot Owl" restrictions just went in place on section III of the Big Hole. Big Hole River Report

Info Sunrise Fly Shop - Wednesday, July 20, 2016

Mid Summer fishing has been solid on the Big Hole River. You will need a variety of flies since one day they are keyed into a certain bug and the next day they want something completely different. You will find some PMD's, caddis, and sallies on the water. We are about to move into Trico season on the Big Hole so be ready to have some Trico's with you on the water. Dry flies of choice have been #12 Chubby chernobyl's; #16 Para wolf's; #16 comparaduns; #16 PMX's. Our nymphs of choice have been changing daily. I would have some streamers; Pat's stone's; #16 super flash pheasant tail's; #16 psycho mayflies; #16 Batman nymphs. We have no closures to report to you. Warm weather is in the forecast so please pay attention to water temperatures. If trout get stressed keep em' wet.
